+ Father
Jim jokingly said he was going to give Senior Warden, Judi McCullough a raise in pay. Since she took
over, vestry meetings have run less than two hours.
Actually we would have finished even earlier if some people had not been so
long-winded, she said with a grin as she looked directly at certain colleagues.
Another reason the meetings are shorter is because the Vestry members are reporting
as triads, or groups, instead of individually. These three-person teams have scriptural
names: Galatians, Ephesians and Colossians.
+ For example, the Ephesians, consisting
of Dick Gerhart, Anna Haeffner and Dick Wernick, met in executive session and talked
about putting up a new sign publicizing our new building. One suggested sign was:
We're growing. Come grow with us.
It was discovered, however, that since this
area is zoned residential, only two signs are allowed. In fact, the two signs we have
hanging on the church building are technically illegal.
Father Jim opined that Craft Construction Company would put up a sign if they ever
start work. Gary Bradshaw, Chairman of the
Building Committee, replied that there is a building schedule and that renovation of our
current building will be the first phase, along with site work for the new structure.
It seems that everyone is ready to go except the county engineer. Presumably when
he is up to speed, work will start.
+ After Assistant Treasurer Russ Housel gave the treasurer's report, Gary
asked if the church is behind in the Building Fund. Father Jim said that we were but that
he would be sending out reminders to those who have not contributed yet.
We will need to borrow $60,000 if everyone meets their pledges, the
rector explained.
+ Dick
Wernick said his Memory Garden Committee would like to have ideas on how best to
distribute the new Memory Garden brochures.
Anna Haeffner
wanted to know if there was a limit to the number of cremains that can be scattered in the
garden. Bob Mostertz, who serves on the
committee, replied, Not really. Father Jim said that we would not turn people
away .
Gary suggested that the brochures go to members of the congregation first. Several
Vestry members had other ideas including giving them to funeral directors and placing them
in churches that do not have a garden.
Father Jim commented that it would not be a good idea to distribute brochures until
we had a procedure and appropriate forms in place.
+ Deacon
Jan reported that the Alpha retreat, held at our church, went very well. She also said
that she is working on a Hurricane/Disaster plan.
+ Deb
Teahan told the Vestry that she would be posting a sign-up sheet to cover Sunday
School during the summer when the regular teachers take a break.
+ Ros
Hall acknowledged that there was a little confusion when people go forward for
communion. She said she would have at least one usher up front to direct traffic.
Since the sanctuary was rearranged to allow more seating, people in the middle
section go first after the choir if it is there. They go forward on the right side (facing
the altar), fill in all spaces along the rail and return to their seats along the left
aisle.
Then each side goes forward to their respective side of the rail and return via the
route they took to go forward. At least that is the way it is supposed to be done.
+ The next vestry meeting will be May 14.
Father Jim will be on his vacation, continuing education and sabbatical June 4 through
July 30 Either the June or July Vestry meeting will be canceled as usual. Judi will
conduct the other one and with any luck, she will be able to set a modern day record for
meeting brevity.
