Bruce Simington presented vestry members with
proposed by-laws for Nativity and the vestry agreed to accept them and
offer them for approval at the annual general meeting, which is being
moved to Wednesday, January 31, at 7:00 p.m.
Those serving on the by-laws committee, besides Bruce,
included Nancy Hardin, Deborah Young, George Smith and Nancy John Langdon.
Bruce also reported that the architect is about 45 days
away from having the working drawings completed for our new sanctuary. We
are looking at a groundbreaking date of Saturday, February 3, which is why
the annual general meeting was moved.
Two vestry retreats are scheduled. One, which was
scheduled for November 7, has been postponed until Sunday, November 5,
from Noon until 5:00 p.m. The other is slated for Saturday, February 10,
after new vestry members are elected.
So far, six members have agreed to run for the
vestry. They include Raymond Kow, George Smith, Dick Gerhart, June Hanley,
Gary Bradshaw and Bonnie Neiger.
Dick Wernick reported that more plans for the Sola
Dei Gloria Memory Garden were developing and that the garden will be
dedicated during the church's annual Thanksgiving service, which will be
November 23 at 9:30 a.m. That service will be in the garden, weather
permitting.
Deb Teahan announced that there was a special list
for our snow angels who are interested in signing up for Winners Dinners
when they return to their "home away from home". She also said
that all the groups would be rearranged in January.
Vestry members agreed that the audit report which
was submitted to the Diocese, needed to be updated. Father Jim, Russ
Housel and Joe Schifano also will discuss a stewardship drive and work on
a budget which will be presented at the next meeting, set for November 13.
Anna Haeffner, who has been reinstated as a voting
member of the vestry, will meet with Father Jim to establish a date when
they can meet with concerned parents regarding child care at additional
services
Anna also said she would review various recommendations
regarding our outreach contributions and make a suggestion at the November
meeting.
Ros Hall reported on a proposal to help financially
people who enter various ministerial study programs. She explained that
she talked with different people including the Rev. Victoria Kempf from
the Diocese.
Ros said that diocesan scholarships were available, but
candidates should go to their churches first. In addition, the CPC program
can assist with books, but soliciting the Sara Howell Memorial Fund would
not be appropriate.
Another suggestion was that candidates could apply for
aid after completing one year to demonstrate their dedication to the study
project.
In other business, the vestry postponed a decision
to hire Deacon Jan Brown as an administrator and agreed to allow Father
Jim to take a sabbatical next year. His plans are to go to Israel for 10
days in January and then take 11 weeks off during the summer to travel to
Israel and England.
This would replace his annual vacation and continuing
education time. Father Gerry would fill in during his absence. Father Jim
also has applied for a grant through the Lilly Foundation of Indianapolis.
Looking at the December schedule, Father Jim
reminded the vestry that a special Lessons and Music service would be
December 17, beginning at 4:00. There will be only one service at 9:30 on
the morning of December 24, but there will be two Christmas Eve services,
one at 6:00 p.m. and the other at 10:00 p.m. One Christmas Day service is
slated for 9:30 a.m.
