Vestry members unanimously elected Joe Schifano as Treasurer at its regular monthly meeting on August 11. Joe who served in that capacity from 1989 to 1991 agreed to take on the task with the condition that Russ Housel would continue as Assistant Treasurer. "You need a team to do this job," Joe said, "Our attendance had doubled and we had 80 people who pledged. Whereas I used to write twenty checks a month, Russ writes more than that in a week now." Russ also presented a new format for the Treasurers Report and the Vestry approved. Nearly everyone expressed how much better it is and how easy it is to understand. Dick Wernick, the Junior Warden, introduced Bob Mostertz who made a report on the Memory Garden. Bronze plaques are being installed at a cost of $6,015. Vestry members agreed to transfer $2,900 from the memorial fund to cover the shortfall in the Memory Garden Fund. Richard Cooper is heading a committee which will give people a chance to buy bricks for $1,000 each. The proceeds will go toward the maintenance of the Memory Garden. In other business, the Vestry: Named Joanne Marino, Lois Johnson and Jabbo Gordon, whose terms expire this year, to the Nominating Committee. Anyone who is interested in serving our church in this vital way should contact one of these members.Agreed to invite the Cornerstone Mennonite Church to use our facilities again starting September 1 for $125 per month. That group used our church before but moved to Sarasota Christian School. Nancy John Langdon will be the official liaison. Leaned from Joanne Marino that the Vacation Bible School went very well. "All volunteers went above and beyond," she said. "We had wonderful crafts and wonderful food. The school had 24 youngsters in the program and it ran from 9:00 to 11:30 am. "We may make it a half hour shorter next summer," Joanne said, "But we want to keep the same approximate dates which means early in the summer." Nancy John reported that the Kindermusik Program which had approached us about using our facilities, will not be coming after all. No reason was given.She also reported that George Smith, Bruce Simington, Deborah Young, Nancie Harden and Nikki Vance are serving on the Bylaw Committee. Nancy John seemed to think that the group will need only three or four sessions to come up with a viable set of bylaws for the church. Currently, the church is operating under a generic set which was provided by the Diocese. Deb Teahan announced that the Winners Dinners program was ready to go. Virginia and Bill Stemple have been working hard with it, and the first one is scheduled for September.Judi McCullough said the Audit Committee has slowed down but she expects that a report will be made to the Diocese on time. Father Gerry said that he will conduct a Childrens Instructional Service on September 10. The Christian Education and Sunday School Registration will occur on the same date. Deacon Jan reported that there would be a Vestry Retreat on Saturday, October 7, and
that she had seen Father Ken Davis during her recent trip to Michigan. He is doing well
after surgery in June and should be back in the area in November.
