Vestry
Committee
Meeting

(From June 2000 Nativity newsletter)

Dick Wernick gave an update of the Sola Dei Gloria Memory Garden at the May meeting. He said that approximately $50,000 had been invested and there was at least another $20,000 to go.

Along those lines, members voted to transfer $20,888 from the Building Fund to the Memory Garden Fund per the wishes of the donor.

The Junior Warden said a wall would be built soon and cautioned that there will have to be significant maintenance on the project after it is completed. Regarding the most recent break-in, Dick said the door had been fixed and that he is looking into a security system. "We need to give this some thought, especially when we build the new church," he added.

Dick had also completed the striping on the handicap parking spaces in the North parking lot. Four spaces are all that are necessary, but we only had two.

He also reported that the air conditioning plant has four new filters and that the lines are clear.

† Vestry members heard about the excessive use of our copier and agreed to look into the prospects of obtaining a newer copier.

Deacon Jan reported that she was attending a conference entitled "Start Up, Start Over" which deals with church growth.

† The Vestry discussed the definition of Memorial Fund and Father Jim explained that it was non-designated funds that were used for items not covered in the budget.

† The Rector also said that he and Sharon would be conducting a Parenting Program called "Growing Kids, God’s Way," in the Fall. It will be on Sunday, Tuesday or Friday, depending on everyone’s schedule.

Lois Johnson announced that Nicki Coffaro and Marcia Simington had agreed to serve as lay delegates on the Manatee Community College Chaplaincy Corporate Board.

† Since Joanne Marino, the Christian Formation Commissioner, was absent due to packing and moving, Lois made the Vacation Bible School report. So far, there are four teachers for several youngsters in the 3 to 8 year old age range. The hours will be from 9 to noon, June 19 - 23. She also said that Joanne had donated $200 from her Yard Sale to the church. Lois recommended, and the Vestry agreed, to donate $1200 a year to the MCC Chaplaincy program.

† Lois also said that our Music Director had made a request for a special Christmas program on Sunday, December 17, entitled "Advent Festivals" which involves lessons and music. Our cost of the program will be $750.

Father Jim reported that the Building Fund campaign figure stood at $1,116,000 and quickly added that the drive is not over. The Rector said he had talked with architect about proceeding and was told that this will be the slow phase of the project while county permits are obtained.

"This can be time consuming, but we hope to break ground by the end of November," Father Jim said.

Nancy John Langdon reported on her research involving the proposed ‘kindermusik’ program administered by Virginia Koepky, who heads the music program at St. Mark’s Church, Venice. "It will introduce children to the joys and wonders of music," Nancy John said. "The hours will be from Noon to 6 p.m., but the days have not been set."

Deb Teahan announced that Winners Dinners will start in September under the direction of Ann Gurley, Betty Ann Mostertz and Virginia Stemple. Winter visitors, who are interested in participating, will be plugged in when they arrive.

Anna Haeffner once again brought up the matter of child care for the additional services that the church has. She said she would see if other parents would be willing to volunteer their time on a rotating basis.

Father Jim said he was thinking in terms of an Autumn Alpha program to help bring the unchurched to Nativity.

† In other business, the Vestry members:

Agreed to retain Howard Roshaven as the musician for Saturday services.

Learned that the Ascension Day service will be Thursday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Heard that Father Jim will be on vacation June 26 through July 11.

Decided to meet on June 12 but not to have a July Vestry Meeting.

Father Jim concluded by telling the members that this past year has been one of the most enjoyable of his life. He wanted to thank everyone for their efforts in the church becoming a parish, the Building Fund drive and the addition of Father Gerry and Deacon Jan. "I look for great things in the future," he added.
