May 2000 Nativity newsletter)
Nativity's buildings, current and planned, and their surroundings monopolized April's Vestry meeting. Junior Warden, Dick Wernick, led off with a Memorial Garden report. Lois Johnson volunteered to work on a Memorial Book that will serve as a record for all memorial donations, not only to the Sola Dei Gloria Memory Garden, but to the Church buildings as well. However, the church may have a separate book for the new church. Lois will talk to a few other parishioners, such as Liz Stoner and Duane Deuel, and make a report at the May 8 meeting. Lois also asked about rearranging the stations of the cross in the garden so that they begin and end at the altar instead of the entrance gate. Dick explained why it was done the way it is although having them begin and end at the altar may seem simpler. Dick updated the Vestry members on the air conditioning problems and said he would continue to work on it and service it until we get a new one. The Junior Warden also said he would add two more handicap parking spaces in the Northwest section of the paved part, and they will meet the legal requirements. Anna Haeffner asked about plans for the present building and Dick replied that he would be talking with Bruce Simington, Chairman of the Building Committee, about the best path to take. Dick added that he would obtain some conceptual drawings for renovating the current building. Vestry members agreed to cancel advertising in the Bradenton Herald and Nancy John Langdon will look into placing ads in the East County Observer. Elly Freyer suggested some direct mail advertising to residents in area zip codes but emphasized that a follow-up plan was vital. The Vestry decided to wait until construction of the new sanctuary had started so that it would help attract attention. Joanne Marino reported that this year's Vacation Bible School will be June 19-23 and that she is searching for a main topic. Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Joanne is looking for teachers and helpers. Judy McCullough told the other Vestry members that Bob Halliday, Nicki Coffaro, Bruce Simington and Dick Gerhart will be working on the annual audit which is due in September. Russ Housel, the church's Assistant Treasurer, mentioned that he has talked to Joe Schifano about making the monthly financial reports more simple. "We hope to resolve all the problems in the next two months," Russ added. Deacon Jan Brown announced that the diocese was conducting its annual Sexual Harassment and Child Abuse Prevention training May 1 and 2. The closest training site will be at Bradenton's Christ Church. Jabbo Gordon said that the Annual Baseball Outing was a huge success with 30 people participating in spite of the heat. The group saw the Boston Red Sox nip the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, before a sellout crowd at Sarasota's Ed Smith Stadium on March 29. The church's photo directory is progressing well and those who signed up for pictures should receive them by Mother's Day. Father Jim reminded members that Celebration Sunday for the Hope and a Future building fund drive would be May 7. Confirmation will be at Sarasota's Church of the Redeemer on Wednesday, May 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Read
