Vestry
(Mission Committee)
Meeting

(From December, 1998 Nativity newsletter)

Nativity's tentative financial situation highlighted the November meeting. Treasurer Ray Kimmens reported that he could not pay some bills because there was not enough money in the Operating Fund.

Ernie Lohmann, the Stewardship and Finance Commissioner, recommended that the committee shift $5,000 from the Memorial Fund to the Operating Fund to cover expenses, and all the members agreed.

Bishop's Warden Dick Wernick said that committee members need to share their tithing experience with the congregation. "We need to give the congregation the picture, and then inspire and motivate the other members to tithe," he said.

Junior Warden Bruce Simington, who is also Chairman of the Building Committee, was off celebrating his anniversary, but Father Jim said that the new building plans still had many hurdles to clear. These include gaining approval from the diocese and from Sarasota County.

Joanne Bednarsh, the Christian Formation Commissioner, said she is looking for some volunteers who have had experience with Vacation Bible Schools. She is also looking for youngsters who will participate next summer. Plans are to have it after school is out. We might partner with another mission or even with another denomination's church, according to Joanne.

Nicki Coffaro, Fellowship Commissioner, said the Oktoberfest went well. "The kids had fun, and the barbershop quartet was great," she said. "We have tentatively assigned the groups for the Winners Dinners, trying to shift folks around so they are not with the same group as last year."

Worship Commissioner Lois Johnson said that she had started a get together for single women. She explained that she counted 40 in our congregation and that 16 had attended the first pot luck dinner that she hosted. Another gathering is scheduled for Sunday, December 13 from 12:30 to 5:30 pm.

The first Saturday service had 34 in attendance. Father Jim said it went well.

Joe Schifano, Outreach Commissioner, recommended that the committee donate $500 to our companion diocese in the Dominican Republic and $400 to the Manatee Community College Campus Ministry. The $29 that is left from the budgeted amount will go to the Presiding Bishop's Fund.

Father Jim reminded commissioners that their yearly reports will be due December 30. The next Mission Committee meeting will be December 14 and the session will be devoted primarily to the 1999 budget.
