(Mission Committee)

(From November, 1998 Nativity newsletter)

Bishop's Warden Dick Wernick announced that St. Margaret of Scotland church in Sarasota is building a new building that will cost $1.1 million, and that group is using the same architect that we are. Father Jim said that St. Margaret of Scotland is about six months ahead of us in its new building project and Dick added that we will learn from that church's efforts. Dick also said that we are still looking for a new treasurer to replace Ray at the beginning of the year, and that there is one person in particular who has expressed an interest in the position.

The Bishop's Warden is inviting members who are interested in serving on the vestry to make their desires known to the nominating committee, which consists of himself, Joe Schifano and Ernie. Three new members of the nine-person mission committee will be elected at the annual general meetings, which is slated for January.

Bruce Simington, the junior warden, said that the church dodged a bullet when Hurricane Georges passed by us with little damage. "We are sitting here with no protection," he said. "We need to protect our windows at least." The question then becomes how extensively we want to go with that protection. Permanent shutters, for example, would cost $15,000 to $20,000, but the cost of our building insurance would go down. Bob Halliday will check on the insurance situation. Then he and Bruce will study the situation and make a report at the next meeting.

Joanne "Assisi" Bednarsh announced that she has already started working on having a Vacation Bible School at Nativity next summer. She is looking at other churches to see how they handle VBS. People have signed up to help with Sunday School classes, according to Joanne, but some of them are not showing up.

Nicki Coffaro is encouraging everyone to sign up for the Winners' Dinners and for the annual parish picnic at Longwood Run on November 21.

Mission committee members voted unanimously to send checks totaling $2,000 to various outreach ministries including Resurrection House, Noel House, and the Dominican Republic. This leaves almost $1,000 in the outreach ministry budget, according to Joe Schifano. He also said he would come back with a proposal on how we can further help the Dominican Republic, which was ravaged by Hurricane Georges. Lois Johnson suggested that members consider a donation to the Manatee Community College ministry in the future.

Lois Johnson also announced that she is helping in scheduling the lectors, ushers, and greets. And she said November 22 would be Youth Sunday. A new Saturday service will begin November 7, beginning at 6:00 PM. Father Jim explained that the aim is to better accommodate people who have come to us through the Alpha program. "It is also a convenience for those who can't make it Sunday, and to appeal to the unchurched," he said. "We're committed to starting it and running it indefinitely."

Lois reported on the diocesan meeting in Punta Gorda and recommended that we have a fire drill for children.

Father Jim called attention to a new computer installation and training session on November 7. He also said the annual "Man 2 Man" program was scheduled for DaySpring on November 13 through 15. He added there was a good response to the second Alpha program. The number of adults ranges from three to seven. "It is smaller than the first, but there is a strong nucleus," he said. There will be a Thanksgiving Day service on November 26, beginning at 9:30. The next Mission Committee meeting is set for November 9, starting at 7:00 pm.
