Newsletter of Church of the Nativity, Sarasota October, 2000 Rector's Rubrication: Christianity, a powerful new way of thinking Friendship Sunday Church of the Nativity's Annual Friendship Sunday will be on October 22 at both the 8:30 and 10:30 Services. Please plan to bring some special people to church with you that morning. Invitations will be available at the beginning of October for you to send to these special people. See the thumbnail view of the invitations to the left. LESSONS AND CAROLS We are in the midst of a very exciting season. Don't forget that we will do Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 17. If you would like to participate in this with the choir or the handchimes choir, please leave a message for Karla Porter, either at the church office, her voicemail 329-0419, or by e-mail: kjoanporter@juno.com UNITED THANK OFFERING Through the generosity and caring of many people in our Diocese of Southwest Florida, compelling needs worldwide will be met. This is a real outpouring of praise and thanksgiving for all of our God-given blessings. Every cent of UTO offerings received will help those less fortunate, beginning in our Diocese and extending throughout the world. Grants are given to build needed shelter, missions, schools, and hospitals; to provide land, machinery, trucks, buses; to feed and clothe whole neighborhoods and encampments of needy people. UTO has sent missionary teachers, nurses and doctors to serve and teach the untrained and poorly educated. The "Blue Box" has been in our churches for over one hundred years; in the last twenty-six of those years, this Diocese has received twenty-five grants. TAKE A PEEK at the handiwork of the Quilting Sisters. Visit our first annual quilting show (not sale) in the Betty Daniels Room on Sunday, Nov. 5, during the coffee hours following both services. Our table runners quilts, sample blocks and more, are on display just to whet your appetite for the sampler quilt planned to raise funds for our new church. If you want to be a quilt block sponsor, contact Linda Seehawer, 377-3159 for all the details. DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that you dont have to chase all over the dual county area to find a Notary Public? We are blessed to have not one but two Notaries in our midst. They are our marvelous Church Secretary Elly Freyer and our no less marvelous Deacon Jan. If you ever need their services, you should contact them directly. HOPE AND A FUTURE 'We hope you are continuing to pray daily for our Hope and A Future building campaign. Don't forget to remit the funds you have pledged toward our new church building! God is doing a good work among us, and we need to do our part. Additional monies may be given to the building project at any time. If you need envelopes or wish to make a pledge, please see Deacon Jan. Holiday Ministries Update Please observe the following schedule:
Millie Bennett, ECW Outreach Chair, 751-9988 THANKS FOR ASKING... A few of you have asked how we, Nativity, can afford to have three priests, a deacon, a secretary, a music director, and a treasurer on the payroll. The Tidings, our web page and the diocesan directories list all of us in connection with Nativity. Yet, the answer is, we can't afford it and we don't. Directory listings notwithstanding, just the rector (Jim+, full-time), the secretary (Elly, part-time), and the music director (Karla, part-time) are on the payroll. Fr. Gerry Bennett and Fr. Ken Davis (winter months) are non-stipendiary associate priests. When they fill in upon the occasion of Fr. Jim's absence, they are compensated as supply priests. Deacon Jan, by definition, cannot be paid for diaconal ministry. She was hired for 3 months to spear-head our Hope and A Future campaign and may be hired in the future for other administrative or staff functions but she is not paid staff. (By the way, Jan does excellent work.) The time is rapidly approaching when we may have to hire additional staff but for now, this is us. Thanks for asking. FALL FEST 2000 A New Twist Yes!! Back by popular demand (well, literary license maybe,) our second Fun, Fall Flea Market and Crafts Fair will be Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The new twist for this year is that you bring your own "elegant junque," (already priced to sell) at 8:00 AM. Nativity will have several tables if you would like to donate your items for us to sell. Or, if you have so much that you want your own table, 8 table rental is $20.00. The $20 rental fee is due at the Church Office by Wednesday, October 18. We will be advertising for the public to rent tables to sell their own "Treasures." Please encourage your family, friends and neighbors to rent a table. Maybe two or three households could go in together. Crafts will be available, as well. If you have a favorite crafter, please tell them about our event and have them rent a table. Perhaps you dont have enough to sell on your own. Either donate your items to the Nativity Craft table to sell or get together with someone else for your own table. We will re-price articles as the day goes on. Remember what a great time we had last year? Lets do it again! All proceeds will benefit the Building Fund. We will be encouraging the "outsiders" to donate something from their profits, as well. If you have any questions, ask Irene, Nicki or Lois. Watch for the sign-up poster to help with setup, cleanup and selling. Thanks.
