A Word of Appreciation to our Counters
Russ Housel,
our Asst. Treasurer, and Joe
Schifano, our Treasurer, would like to offer thanks to those
parishioners who help on a regular basis to count the Nativity
offerings. The working system requires one person to assist Russ every
Monday morning. Together they count cash, run tabs, stamp checks, record
amounts, etc. The job entails a commitment of at least 2 hours. Russ
then records all contributions on the computer (before making the bank
deposit).
Please
offer your own personal thanks to Irene
Wernick, Dick Wernick, Dick Gerhart, Dan Benefiel, Liz Stoner and Marguerite
Hatfield for their able assistance.
Senior Ministry
As of the first of May, the Senior Ministry of
the Church of the Nativity will have completed its second month of
service at the Life Care Center
of Sarasota. This is
a new facility located on Tuttle just north of University Parkway. Some of our
activities are showing video tapes, assisting with taking residents on
outings, serving ice cream (three times a week), and visiting one on one
with the residents. One
resident understands Russian only. Can anyone speak Russian?
The Senior Ministry group meets at the church on the third
Thursday of each month at 10:00 am. Come and join us to find out about
this most rewarding service.
Sola Dei Gloria Memory Garden
We have enclosed a copy of the new Sola Dei Gloria Memory
Garden brochure in this issue of Nativity's Tidings.
We think it's a colorful, attractive folder to inform you and
anyone interested in knowing more about the Garden.
We hope any questions you may have are answered in the pamphlet.
Please check with the church office if you need additional
information. Our thanks to
Jo Davidsmeyer and her clever computer skills for creating the brochure.
We invite you to share this special outreach from Nativity with
your friends and neighbors. Perhaps
they're looking for a church home and this will be the offering that
brings them to Nativity. You
will find additional copies on the table in the narthex of the church,
so help yourself. If there is anyone who has not as yet visited the Garden
(which we cannot imagine!) you're missing a lovely experience.
(Webmaster's Note: Brochures are also
available in the church foyer (narthex). If you would like brochures
mailed to you, contact Father Jim.
The information and photos in the brochure are available on our website,
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome
Welcome
to two new members of our congregation. Evan
Simington was confirmed and Nora
Abraham was received at Confirmation
Services at St. Wilfreds in Sarasota on April 25 with Bishop
John Lipscomb presiding.
Golf Tournament
It
was a record setting performance by the Chris
Bradshaw team of Char Hull,
Father Gerry Bennett, and
Shirley Borsani. They shot a 13 under par 59 to better
the previous low of 63, which was set during the inaugural Hope and A
Future tournament in 1998. Figuring the handicap, the foursome had a
score of 49½.
Raymond Kows team placed second with a 49 7/8. With Raymond were June
Cooper, George Decker and
Dick Gerhart. Emilia Grecos group of Lew
Dingier, Betty Kelly and
Audrey Schmidt took third with a 51 1/2.
Audrey
was closest to the pin on No. 3, but 12-year-old Drew
Honroth hit the shot of the day. Drew captured the prize on the 17th
hole as he stroked his drive to within 18 inches of the hole.
Father
Jim Murphy continued to be the albatross around his team's neck, once again dragging it down to last place in spite of everything the
tournament committee could do. Dick
Berg even assigned his brother, Bill, to the team in hopes of
raising the level of play somewhat. After all, Bill once defeated Arnold
Palmer in an exhibition match. Well, actually Bill was on a team that
defeated Arnies, team. And in all fairness, Bill was suffering from a
severe crick in his neck and even had to go to the hospital. But that
didnt get Father Jim off the hook (pun intended) and his team won a
video tape on how to play tournament golf. As other Cleveland Indians
fans like to say "wait until next year."
The
tournament, proceeds totaled a whopping $480.00 which go to the Hope and
a Future Building Fund, had a full complement of
72 golfers. There were 95 for the dinner which followed.
In
another golf story, our own Todd
Read shot a 73-73--146 to finish sixth place in
the Sarasota City Seniors Golf Tournament at Bobby Jones Golf Course.
Congratulations
