(from the July 2004 issue of Tidings)
They Also Serve...
(Jo Davidsmeyer reporting)
In the last issue
of Tidings, we began describing the various lay worship opportunities at
Nativity. We continue the series this month with a description of the role
of Lector.
Lectors
God's Word is
spoken directly to us at every
service. The
lessons each week are read by
our fellow
worshippers, known as “lectors.”
Lector is derived
from the Latin word for
reader. Lectors are
non-ordained volunteers
who participate in
a ministry of service to the
congregation.
Lectors enter into a warm and loving relationship with the Word of God.
We need several
more lectors on our
schedule. Any
member of the congregation
can serve in this
special capacity. After
participating in a
short training session, new
lectors are added
to the worship schedule.
You will
find that being a
lector
blesses you as much
as it
blesses others. We
rotate
readers. This
allows you as a
reader to study and
rehearse
and take time to
let the Lord touch you and
fill you with His
words, so that you can in
turn let His words
be a light for His people.
Historically,
licensed lay readers of the
Episcopal Church
have often officiated at the
daily offices
(morning prayer, evening
prayer, compline).
As our church grows, we
hope to expand to
include a special reading
ministry of lectors
to officiate at daily prayers.
