Church Periodical Club:
|
(From February 2001 Nativity newsletter)
As we ponder the message in John 21:6, we might ask ourselves what the right side of the boat symbolizes: is this merely a quaint little story about a school of fish on the starboard side of a boat and an ordinary man who knew about the fish because he already caught some? Or is Jesus illustrating that the right side of the boat means recognizing him as a friend, a friend who will point to the place where the "fish" seeking to be fed may be gathered? The founders of the Church Periodical Club understood he is our friend indeed and that we need only obey his directions and believe the truth of his word to drop our net on the right side of the boat, to discover where the "fish" are and to be able to minister to them and draw them closer to Jesus. That is why they established the NBF and the MOP. CPC is the only Episcopal agency whose purpose is to supply, free of charge, written materials, tapes and -videos to people as young as five years, and having no upper age limit. These materials promote skills that run the gamut from learning to read to understanding and spreading the knowledge of God, who Jesus is and the power of his love. NBF is for adults while MOP is for children up to the age of eighteen. Once a year, we celebrate CPC Sunday. We have a used book sale for the NBF in the weeks prior to that Sunday. The sale ends on CPC Sunday, February 4, this year. Special prayers for the work of CPC will be said on that day and an offering taken for NBF. Please give generously, thinking of your offering as a knot in a net dropped on the right side of the boat, a net that will overflow with a bountiful catch. June Hanley Other CPC articles:
