(From November 2000 Nativity newsletter) How great is the love the Father has lavished
on us that we should be called children of God. Everyone
who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. The intensity of John's joy resonates in our hearts as we read his words. We believe, therefore we are children of God! And yet, each of us has his own story - a story that reveals the way we came to believe and how we live because we believe. In our joy, we wish to share the truth of God's great love with others, especially with those whose story of new birth has not yet begun to unfold. As participation in the work of CPC increases at Nativity and in our Diocese, more minds and hearts have the opportunity to know what it is like to be called children of God. Even though going out into the world with the Good News can be a great challenge, our parish and our diocese strive to meet the need. As of November first this year, the Diocese of Southwest Florida sent twenty-nine miles of pennies to the national office for MOP grants. But we cannot rest on our laurels. CPC grants are given to individuals and institutions affiliated with the Episcopal Church for reading materials and aids to literary exploration. The NBF furnishes awards to adults, while MOP serves children. If you know of someone in our parish who needs NBF or MOP assistance, encourage him/her to apply. Applications may be obtained from your CPC representative. In addition, any group within a parish that has a demonstrated need, e.g., for Christian Education classes, VBS, or the library may apply. All of the money put in our MOP basket must be sent to the New York office for grants which they award throughout the year. But did you know that each parish may retain up to one-half of the yearly ingathering on CPC Sunday to purchase books or videotapes for our library, for hymnals, prayer books and the like? In the past we have sent all ingathering and book sale funds to the New York office to be used for NBF grants which are awarded each spring and fall. However, if you are aware of a need here at Nativity, please speak to me about it as soon as possible. Remember, the book sale will run from January 21st through February 4th when we will celebrate CPC Sunday. Cherishing the great love that God has lavished on us, adopting us as His children, let us be lavish in our praise of God and our support of CPC. June Hanley |
