National Books Fund and Miles of Pennies Fund

(From March, 1998 Nativity newsletter)

Those who impart wisdom will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and forever.
Daniel 12:3

Supporting the outreach of CPC, an independent affiliated organization of the Episcopal Church, is a way to spread the wisdom that leads to righteousness! CPC depends entirely on voluntary contributions to carry out its ministry of the printed word. The National Books Fund awards grants to hospitals, libraries, schools, seminarians, college students, prisons, drug abuse centers, retirement homes, seafarer’s institutes and companion dioceses. Pause a minute after church to read the CPC poster in the hallway; it will give you an idea of the scope and variety of the most recent NBF Grants.

MANY THANKS TO ALL for the success of our Bring a Book - Buy a Book campaign and CPC Sunday. NBF has been sent a gift of $301.79 from Nativity’s generous congregation.

The Miles of Pennies Fund grants awards to children’s facilities only. Those grants promote literacy and provide Christian literature to underprivileged youngsters in the United States and throughout the world. The largest award is equal to one mile of pennies: $844.80. The Diocese of Southwest Florida has contributed nearly nineteen miles of pennies and lead the Diocese of Los Angeles in MOP donations.

Since August 1997, Nativity has contributed 0.276 miles of pennies, 1459 feet, to the Miles of Pennies Fund.

The Church Periodical Club (CPC) is a leader in providing books and grants to church sites around the world.

He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God And They will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be their peace.
(Micah 5:4,5)

Today, secure in the truth of these promises the wise men quoted so long ago, we rejoice. However, those "at the ends of the earth" who have not heard the name of the Lord Jesus do not have the same assurances and comfort.

CPC, through its National Books Fund and Miles of Pennies fund spreads "the majesty of the name of the Lord" throughout the world. In 1998, we at Nativity sent over $332 to CPC to further the knowledge of God, worship, mercy and peace.

Mark February 7 on your calendar. On that day, we will have our annual National Books Fund collection.

Bring a book, buy a book. Watch for this sign announcing our special one month book sale from January 10 through February 7. Beginning January 3, bring books from your collection for our sale and place them on the table in the hallway. Then look over others that have been donated and select some to red and enjoy.

For each book you choose, put any amount up to $1 in the jar on the table. All proceeds will go to the national Books Fund.

Tie a little string around your finger to remind you to check your pockets for pennies for the MOP jar in the narthex. And remember to put pennies in the jar for the number of years you are celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. That is an especially easy way to demonstrate thankfulness for the many kinds of literature available to us and to be a blessing to children near and far.

Through Church Periodical Club's National Books fund (NBF) and Miles of Pennies (MOP) fund, we at Nativity take part in proclaiming to people near and far God's glorious work. We celebrate CPC Sunday once a year, praising and thanking God for the opportunity to encourage others in the Christian walk and asking for His continued blessing. Mark February 7th on your 1999 calendars as CPC Sunday. We will have our annual National Books Fund collection on that date.

BRING A BOOK, BUY A BOOK — In conjunction with that, we will have a special sale of used books each Sunday from January 10th through February 7th. Please look over your book collection for some you would like to share with others in the Nativity family. Bring them to church the first Sunday in January and place them on the table in the hallway designated BRING A BOOK, BUY A BOOK. On the following Sundays, look over our collection and select some for your enjoyment and edification. Place any amount, up to one dollar for each book, in the jar on the table. All proceeds go to the National Books Fund.

STOP AND LOOK! Check the posters in the hallway. See the many needs that have been met through NBF grants this spring, as well as the 1997 MOP grants that are touching the lives of little ones far and wide.

CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY OR ANNIVERSARY? Why not put pennies for each year into the MOP jar in the Narthex? This is a simple way to express our thankfulness for the many kinds of literature available to us and to show our children that they can be a blessing to children less fortunate that they.
