SELECTING A PRAYERBOOK:
The selection of a prayer book is a deeply personal choice. You want a book that you
can feel comfortable with, since you use it as one of many resources in your personal
relationship with God, as well as your communal fellowship of worship at church. A great
variety of versions and sizes are available, something for everyone. There is no
"right" choice, just the choice that feels right to you.
The personal choice of Jo Davidsmeyer (Nativity's
webmaster) is the Personal
Edition, Red Leatherlook. The description "personal edition" just means the
book is smaller than the prayer books supplied in church. "I like the smaller size of
the book," says Jo. "It is light-weight and, for some reason, it just seems to
fit my hand and I feel very personally related to the smaller book." The smaller size
makes the personal editions good choices for youngsters.
Most parishioners at Nativity seem to prefer the larger size prayer
books. For choir members and other people who enjoy music, a prayer book that combines the
1982 hymnal with the book of common prayer is a very popular choice. The soft leatherbound
combination prayerbook/hymnal is used by most choir members at Nativity.
Another popular choice for personal prayer book is one that combines
the Book of Common Prayer and the Bible. This puts the two central texts of the Episcopal
faith in your hands in one easy-to-reference book. These combination books come in the
larger size, and are available in both soft and hard cover. I notice most people in
Nativity seem to prefer the softcover version, usually in leather, which wears well over
the years. Be certain when choosing this combination that you purchase the version of the
Bible used in your congregation. Nativity uses the New International Version (NIV) Bible, but the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) Bible and RSV Bible is also used in many Episcopal congregations.
Whatever choice you make, the book of common prayer will be a daily
reference and comfort in your walk with the Lord.
